Jerusalem - Church of the Condemnation
The church of the Condemnation and Imposition of the Cross was built during the Byzantine era. It was converted into a mosque before being restored to a Catholic church in 1904.
The Bible says " "When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha". Large paving stones are found at this location. The Stations of the Cross mark this as the spot were Jesus was condemned and took up his cross. This may be the place, but the large paving stones have been dated. They were put in place 200 years after the death of Jesus.
Archaeologists have found evidence that agrees with Josephus's statement that Herod's palace was on the west side of Jerusalem. This is where the Roman governors stayed when they were in town. Apparently the church of the Condemnation is on the wrong side of Jerusalem.
